Girl Scout Journey = Success!

Since last April, I have been collaborating with the Girl Scouts of the Florida Panhandle to lead a MEdia Journey for Cadette Girl Scouts (6th to 8th grade).  Two weeks ago, I lead 25 girls scouts and 10 chaperones (with the help of some SFRB volunteers!) in an overnight camping trip.  The weekend was an amazing experience for myself, SFRB and the girls.

We taught them about all types of media (including blogs, music, television programs, magazines, newspapers, social media) through fun activities, games and discussion.  With some fun dance parties, yoga breaks and relay races in between!  The weekend culminated with a MEdia remake in the which each troop chose a topic in the media they were unsatisfied with and remade!  The goal of this remake is to then post it on the internet, create some buzz for it and hopefully have it seen by the creators of the original piece.

Some of the MEdia remakes included...
- Rewriting the lyrics of Lady Gaga's Love Games and creating a music video to go with it
- Designing an appropriate advertisement for a local student housing company
- Styling a photo shoot featuring modest clothing and real girls
- Shooting videos about how to apply makeup naturally and posting them on YouTube

Our Favorites from the Journey
- The UnBranded Fashion Show!
- Ice Cream Sundaes!
- The Market Research Presentation!
- Water Balloon Fight!
- Celebrity Impersonations!
- The Telephone Game and Talking About Stereotypes!
- The Dance Parties!!

Reasons to Look Forward to the New School Year

  1. Football Season!  Florida State is currently ranked #5 and we're set to have an exciting season.  Our first game is Saturday the 3rd against Louisiana Monroe and the determining game of the season is against Oklahoma, on September 17th.  Get ready for Tailgates, the Warchant and and lots of Seminole Spirit.
  2. School Supplies!  Who doesn't love breaking open brand new packages of Sharpie Highlighters or writing your name inside crisp, unused notebooks.  Okay, maybe some people don't.  But having a good set of school supplies can help your be a better and more organized students, or at least lead you to believe so.
  3. Meeting New People!  With the introduction of a new school year, we're bound to be introduced to new friends and acquaintances in our classes, organizations and social activities.  Don't be afraid to get to know these people, you never know what roles they can play in your life.
  4. SFRB!  Students for Real Beauty will have its first general body meeting on September 6th, at 7pm in Union Room 322.  We're determined to have our best year ever - with more workshops, socials and fun!  Come to our meeting and help us have a spectacular semester!

Tips for a Better (And Less Stressful) Exam Week

As Summer approaches, we're all getting ready to throw on our bathing suits and head out of Tallahassee for the upcoming months.  BUT before leave, we still have final exams to tackle.  I know all anyone wants to do right now is lay by the pool, go to happy hour or watch House marathons but stay committed to finishing the Spring semester strong.  It's just two more weeks, all you have to do is work hard for this short period of time and then you're free for four months!  And here are a few suggestions to help you out...

  • Good junk food.  Lets be honest, no one wants to be hungry while studying, or worse snacking on vegetables.  Stock up on peanut butter crackers, oreos and chips the next time you're at Publix
  • Plenty of Sunshines.  Don't stay inside all night and day to cram for your tests.  Take your books and studying out to the pool or Landis for a little sun.  It will brighten your disposition.
  • Plan well in advance.  Make a study schedule now and try to stick to it.  It will keep you from being overwhelmed or underprepared.
  • Set aside time to hang out.  Studying without any breaks can be rough.  Go out for a few hours or get a study party together.
  • Exercise.  It's first purpose is to help balance out the junk food you've been eating.  Exercise's second purpose is to help you relax and focus on something other than school for an hour or two.  Try yoga or running to help sweat our any frustrations.
  • Go Glam for your exams.  While there is no scientific evidence, if you look good and take pride in yourself, then you will feel good.  If you feel good, then you will end up performing better.  Change from your studying sweatpants for the exam and maybe you'll get a few extra points.
